Ingredients

Scale
  • 34 lb beef brisket
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp chili powder (optional for heat)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp beef drippings (from slow cooker or roasting pan)

Instructions

  1. Start by heating olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season the brisket generously with salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder if desired.
  2. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the brisket in the skillet. Sear it on all sides until nicely browned (about 4-5 minutes per side). Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. In your slow cooker, combine beef broth, barbecue sauce, Dijon mustard, and brown sugar. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
  4. Place the seared brisket into the slow cooker. Add sliced onions and minced garlic on top of the brisket.
  5. Cover your slow cooker with a lid. Cook on low for about 8-10 hours or until the meat is tender enough to pull apart easily with forks.
  6. Once cooked, remove the brisket from the slow cooker. Let it rest for about 15 minutes before shredding it using two forks.
  7. In a separate pan over medium heat, melt butter and add brown sugar along with beef drippings from the slow cooker. Stir until combined into a caramel-like sauce then mix with pulled beef before serving.
