  • 14 oz firm tofu
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Steamed rice for serving

Instructions

  1. Pat the tofu dry and cut into 1-inch cubes. Dredge in cornstarch until lightly coated.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a nonstick pan over medium heat. Fry the tofu until golden brown on all sides (about 5-7 minutes). Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, sauté ginger and onion until fragrant. Add soy sauce, brown sugar, and water; bring to simmer.
  4. Mix remaining cornstarch with warm water and add to sauce. Return tofu to pan, toss gently until thickened.
  5. Serve over steamed rice and garnish with chopped scallions or sesame seeds if desired.
